You might have seen the recent feature film “Just Mercy,” which is still playing in some theaters. It tells the story of lawyer Bryan Stephenson, a black man and graduate of Harvard Law, who heads to Alabama to take up the cause of defending those wrongly condemned or not afforded proper representation, due largely to racism. In 1989, Stephenson founded the Equal Justice Initiative to do such work. The EJI is to be a stop on our Civil Rights Pilgrimage, along with The Legacy Museum: From Enslavement To Mass Incarceration and The National Memorial For Peace And Justice also known as the memorial to the victims of lynching.
This Friday night, we’ll be introduced to Mr. Stephenson through his TED Talk, titled “We Need To Talk About An Injustice.” As part of our ongoing learning about American racism, we’ll gain insight into the way in which racism is inseparable from our penal system. The talk includes cameos of his mother as well as Rosa Parks. After the video, we’ll discuss his presentation.
